WOMEN IN THE WAR
In 1914 World War I started when Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated while visiting Sarajevo. After the assassination Austria Hungry declared war on Serbia. As the fighting went on the war started to spread, involving different countries to form alliances together. Three years after the war had started the United States joined in 1917. Men were drafted into war and had to leave their homes to go fight for the country. With thousands of men leaving job opportunities opened up for women. Most of them looked toward the factory business for employment, while others were able to enlist in the war. Some even experienced the war first hand. Besides taking up the jobs men did and joining the military women volunteered in organizations such as the Red Cross. By helping supply the army and taking over the role of men women played an important role during the war.
