Response to War
Many of people had their opinion to the war and what they had thought about the situation. A small number of women were against the war and later joined the bandwagon with conscientious objectors' movement. And a large number stood strong behind the Allied causes. Majority of British Women, were between the two different views and was an escape to make a sacrifice. A war office was set up with the responsibility for labor, weapons, ammunition, raw materials, and food supplies for the armed services, but failed to meet up to their expectations. The war had affected the women ages from 8 to 40 years of age. And so they set up the Woman's Committee of the Council of National Defense. In 1917, suffrage, labor, and temperance movements already organized great numbers of women into clubs, associations and union. The WCCND was appointed on April 21, 1917 and its mandated to advise and support existing programs, not to create new ones.
Women were allowed to enlist in the Navy and Marine Corps if they were not nurses already in the war. Also, were able to serve in the Coast Guard. By the end of the war, women in the american military had served stateside and overseas on the western and eastern fronts. The war marked a new era in women's movement from the home into the public sphere.
